Minecraft's latest update (Java 1.21.5) has arrived, bringing spring into the game! This update—affectionately called "Spring to Life"—is packed with new additions that make the Minecraft world feel more alive (Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5 | Minecraft). In this blog post, we dive into everything new in Minecraft 1.21.5, focusing on gameplay, blocks, mobs, system changes, and bug fixes. We also look ahead to 1.21.6 and future updates, rounding up the confirmed (and rumored) news that lies ahead. Finally, you'll find out how you can easily experience all these cool new features on a PineRiver Minecraft server – with easy version switching, stable performance, snapshot support, and low pings. So fasten your seatbelt (or your elytra) and let's get started!

What's new in Minecraft 1.21.5 – "Spring to Life"

(Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5 | Minecraft) New warm (desert) and cold (snow) variants of farm animals such as cows, pigs, and chickens add extra life to each biome (Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5 | Minecraft).

The Spring Update 1.21.5 focuses on making the Overworld more lively and varied. Mojang describes how "warm winds have swept across the biomes, bringing new mob variants, ambient sounds, and lush flora" into the game (Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5 | Minecraft). Here are the highlights of the new update:

  • New animal variants: Common farm animals have been joined by warm and cold variants. Pigs, cows, and chickens now change appearance depending on the biome they spawn in (Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5 | Minecraft). In cold biomes, you may find extra fluffy, furry pigs and chickens with thicker plumage, while the desert's warm climate produces more slender or lighter variants. Even sheep now have wool colors that match the biome they spawned in, so a flock of sheep in the taiga may look different from one in a flower meadow. This adds more variety and charm when exploring different parts of the world.
  • New plants and blocks: Lots of new flora is sprouting up. Keep an eye out for the Firefly bush (St. John's Wort bush), which glows in the twilight – a fun nod to the fireflies that fans missed. The forest floor is now covered with fallen leaves (Leaf Litter), and a palette of wildflowers adorns meadows and plains (Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5 | Minecraft). In addition, a simple bush block has been added for decoration. In the deserts, cacti can now produce beautiful cactus flowers, and in dry biomes, low and high dry grass grows, giving a real dry prairie look. The plants make the world more vibrant – and provide new materials for decoration.
  • Fallen tree trunks: The forests feel more natural now that you can find fallen tree trunks scattered on the forest floor. For example, you might come across a fallen birch trunk while wandering through the forest. Not only does it look cool, but it also gives you a little extra wood to collect (be careful not to trip over them in VR!).
  • Mobs and sound refinements: Your trusty wolf has expanded its vocabulary—six new wolf sounds have been added, so they now howl and bark in a more varied way. Other sound improvements include new ambient sounds in the desert and badlands, where you can now hear the wind rustling and the sand whispering, as Mojang poetically describes it. This makes lonely desert walks a little less quiet (and a little more atmospheric). In addition, camels now spawn naturally in more places in the desert (not just near villages), so you have a better chance of meeting a humped friend on your desert adventures.
  • Item improvements: All spawn eggs (spawn eggs) have been redesigned. Each egg now has unique colors and patterns that reflect the mob it hatches, making it much easier to tell them apart in Creative mode. Another cool change: The Lodestone block (magnetic stone) can now be crafted—the recipe is 1 iron ingot surrounded by 8 chiseled stone blocks—and it can even be found in chests at destroyed nether portals. This means it's now easier (and cheaper) to make compass navigation for your base without having to use a rare Netherite ingot.
  • "Under the hood" – system and bug fixes: The developers have opened up their internal testing tools by making the Game Test system available in-game via the new /testcommand (Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5 | Minecraft). For mapmakers and data pack enthusiasts, this means that you can run game tests directly in Minecraft to test mechanics. As always, Mojang has also cleaned up a bunch of bugs and errors – for example, an old bug with arrows and tridents that did not catch fire when shot through lava has now been fixed (Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5 | Minecraft). Last but not least, the development team continues to work on improving the performance and engine behind the game, so that Minecraft runs more stably and smoothly for everyone (Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.5 | Minecraft).

Looking ahead: What can we expect in 1.21.6 and future updates?

Although 1.21.5 has just been released, the Minecraft team is not resting on its laurels. The next update, 1.21.6, is already on the horizon and is expected to be released around June 2025. Mojang has revealed some exciting new features coming in this summer update, which is part of their new strategy of releasing four "game drops" per year (one for each season). Here's a sneak peek at what's coming in 1.21.6 — and a little bit about what might come after that:

  • The Ghast Family – Dried Ghast, Ghastling & Happy Ghast: The terrifying ghast from the Nether is getting a welcome (and cute) makeover. In 1.21.6, an entire ghast family will be introduced. Adventurers can find Dried Ghasts as small, sad cubes in the Soul Sand Valley in the Nether. These poor, dehydrated creatures can be picked up as a block (yes, you chop them loose and put them in your pocket!) and taken back to the Overworld. If you revive/rehydrate a Dried Ghast by placing it in water in the Overworld and waiting a bit, it will slowly come back to life with a smile—and suddenly you have a Ghastling as a pet! A Ghastling is a small, friendly mini-ghast that follows you around and loves cold treats (snowballs are its favorite food). After some time (or sooner if you feed it a few snowballs), the Ghastling will grow into a Happy Ghast – a happy, flying ghast that you can even ride! And that's not all: an adult Happy Ghast can carry up to four players on its back like a living hot air balloon (Minecraft Snapshot 25w15a | Minecraft). Yes, you read that right – Minecraft is getting a flying mount where you and your friends can hang out at the same time. Just imagine the view from a floating ghast ride or the crazy races you can have in the sky!
  • "Locator" bar – find your friends in the game: If you've ever tried to find your friends on a multiplayer server, you know how easy it is to get lost from each other. The new Locator Bar makes cooperative play easier. It's a small compass-like bar at the top of your screen that displays symbols for your friends nearby. You may be familiar with this concept from other games: small dots or icons represent other players and show their direction so you can quickly find them. Say goodbye to shouting "where are you? what are your coordinates?" – now you can reunite more easily and continue the adventure together. This will be a welcome feature, especially for servers and Realms where you build and explore in groups.
  • What else does the future hold? In addition to what has already been confirmed for 1.21.6, there is plenty of speculation about future updates. With four seasonal updates a year now, many are guessing what the fall and winter drops in 2025 might contain. Will we finally get an End dimension update? Rumors are swirling that The End might get a loving touch with new islands, structures, or resources, but nothing is certain yet. Others are hoping for more new mobs (Mojang has surprised us before – who saw a rideable ghast coming?), more biomes, or perhaps something else entirely. We'll probably have to wait until Minecraft Live 2025 for the big reveals. Until then, you can follow the weekly snapshots for early glimpses of upcoming features – and remember to share your own ideas on the feedback page, because maybe your idea will be the next big feature!
