Rust has just released the major Jungle update (May 2025), which introduces a brand new tropical biome. This jungle is the first new biome since Rust's launch: a densely vegetated, flat terrain with more vegetation and more rivers than usual. The rivers have been expanded everywhere, so you now have to swim to cross them. The jungle is teeming with new plant life: for example, bromeliads, monstera and arrowroot plants, Calathea grass and lots of new trees (trumpet trees, palm trees, etc.). The largest are giant kapok trees, which you can climb to reach the hanging lianas. The developers also promise that, as usual, you can build bases in the jungle, so your home can be hidden among the palm trees. Be aware: there are thick leaves and low visibility in the jungle, so sounds and movements can hide dangers. Every exploration trip must be planned and every step taken with care.

View of neglected ruins in the jungle, perfect for gathering low-level loot. The jungle hides more secrets. Large stone buildings such as the Jungle Ziggurat emerge from among the trees. Hidden deep in the jungle are also small jungle ruins – primitive ruins filled with trinkets and resources for new players. These ruins provide low-level equipment and materials for early survival. They are ideal for a quick trip into the jungle to gather supplies before moving on. The foundation for your base can even be built nearby – the dense vegetation can hide even the strongest wooden structures from curious enemies.

Vines and climbing

In the jungle, you can swing from the treetops like Tarzan! Interactive vines hang down from the treetops for you to grab onto. Grabbing a vine allows you to swing forward and cover large distances without touching the ground. It's not only fast, but also quiet transportation – perfect when you want to surprise enemies or slip by unnoticed. Important: After you swing once, you must throw the vine back to your friends so they can follow you. The developers even encourage you to 'find your inner Tarzan' in the jungle. The vines can also be cut down: as usual, they provide wood, but after felling, a solid stump remains, and the tree grows back after a while.

New animals: Tiger, panther, crocodile, snake

The jungle is colorful and lush – but it also hides dangerous animals. One of the highlights is the feared tiger. The tiger creeps slowly forward and only pounces when it is sure of a deadly strike. Thus, even a moment's inattention can be fatal. However, the developers have built in subtle signals (sounds or movements) that allow attentive players to spot the tiger in time. A very rare black panther also lurks in the jungle. Its completely black fur makes it almost invisible in the shadows. So remember not only to look for orange stripes – also keep an eye out for black eyes in the dark. According to the developers, there is a way to overpower both the tiger and the panther – a little trick that lurking players must discover for themselves.

Crocodiles swim in the waters. These scaly beasts are extremely tough – according to the developers, the crocodile is perhaps "the toughest animal" in Rust. Although it moves slowly on land, a single bite can take down even the best-equipped players. As with the cats, however, there is also a trick to evading crocodiles – a smart and patient player can escape by using the right medium attack. They like to lurk on the riverbanks, so keep your distance and respect them.

Finally, there are the poisonous snakes. They lie in the grass and strike with lightning speed. Their hiss (a low-frequency drip or hiss) is your only warning sign – jump the moment you hear the snake, and the bite will miss its target. If you don't avoid the attack, the venom will temporarily reduce your mobility. The advantage, however, is that you get snake venom when you kill a snake – a new raw material for the powerful tranquilizer darts for your new blowpipe. Only the most alert and quick-witted survive the dangers of the jungle.

New weapons: Boomerang and Blowpipe

Two new weapons help you cope with the dangers of the jungle. The boomerang is an early game weapon that you can forge in the armory. Throw it in an arc – if you get good at it, it will come right back to your hand. This way, you can injure enemies from a distance and strike again when the boomerang returns. In close combat, you can even use the boomerang as an improvised weapon. A skilled thrower masters their timing so that the boomerang hits its target accurately and doesn't lose sight of you.

The other new weapon is the Blowpipe, ideal for sneak attacks. The Blowpipe is a simple design (just a tube and a mouthpiece), but it spares your ears from noise: it fires special darts silently. Each type of dart has a special effect: A regular wooden stick causes basic damage. The Streupind explodes into several small arrows when fired, good at short range. The Stun Stick slows down the opponent and blurs his vision for a short time. The Beam Stick causes increasing beam damage, so it can be deadly over time.

The blowpipe is cheap to manufacture and extremely quiet, allowing you to surprise enemies quietly and calmly. And there is a clever link to wildlife: the snake venom you collect can, for example, be converted into stun darts for this very weapon. Learn to combine new weapons and the environment – only the prepared will dominate the jungle.

Other improvements and changes

In addition to the brand new jungle content, the update includes many small improvements:

  • Rivers: All rivers have been made longer, wider, and deeper. You can no longer wade – you have to swim, even in the jungle.
  • Automatic cooling: Vending machines can now be connected to power. They function as refrigerators, keeping food fresh for longer.
  • Freshness icon: A new icon in your HUD indicates when food is being cooled and kept fresh.
  • Chicken coop: The chicken coop has been made smaller so that it can be placed on a foundation. It also "snaps" into place during construction for easier building.
  • New meat: Several new types of meat from jungle animals have been added (e.g., tiger and snake meat).
  • Outbreak Researchers: New updated researcher NPCs (Outbreak) have been unleashed in the jungle, so you may encounter surprising enemies among the palm trees.
  • Leather gloves: Leather gloves are now a standard blueprint (no sewing or leather repair tool required).

These small changes enhance the gaming experience: For example, you can now use the turning machine as a refrigerator to make your food last longer. The chicken coop can be easily dismantled on its foundation without additional tools. Overall, they provide more realism and fewer annoyances on your jungle expedition.

Jungle Pack DLC

In addition to the free content, you can purchase the new Jungle Pack DLC with 20 jungle-themed skins and decorations. This optional pack includes:

  • Bamboo furniture: New bamboo shelves (full height, half height, and flat) as well as bamboo shelves for walls.
  • Bamboo Barrels: Skins for large wooden crates to make them look like bamboo barrels (both vertical and horizontal).
  • Jungle Relic Assault Rifle: An antique look for the AK-47 with moss and branches—an overgrown gun as found in the ruins.
  • Cocoknight Armor: A new armor set made from bark, vines, and coconuts (helmet, vest, pants, and now gloves).
  • Obsidian Knochedolk: A new skin for the bone dagger in a black obsidian look, elegant and sharp.
  • Jungle Idol: A new statuette decoration item – a mysterious stone idol said to bring death to its owner.

Also included are new wallpapers, sprays, emojis, and gesture animations in jungle style. The Jungle Pack can be purchased in Rust's Item Store on Steam or directly in the game interface, allowing you to decorate your base with a tropical touch.
