The world of Valheim is ever-evolving, and the latest Valheim updates are truly turning up the heat. The Hildir’s Request update (Valheim patch 0.217) arrived in 2023 with a focus on mid-game content and player customization. It introduces Hildir, a new NPC merchant in the Meadows biome, complete with her own questline. Much like Haldor (the original trader), Hildir sets up a camp – but she offers more than just goods. She tasks players with retrieving some stolen belongings taken during a raid on her camp, sending you on an adventure through several new dungeons (such as the Smouldering Tomb and Howling Cavern) filled with dangers. Along the way, you’ll encounter three new mini-bosses guarding her treasures. Return Hildir’s items, and you’ll unlock an array of new cosmetic gear for purchase – including 10 stylish hats and 14 outfits – letting you personalize your Viking’s look with colorful clothing beyond the standard armor sets. This adds a fun new progression for fashion-minded players without unbalancing the core gear progression, since Hildir’s outfits are mainly for appearance.
Beyond the new quest content, Hildir’s Request brings a slew of quality-of-life improvements and gameplay options. A Barber Station makes its debut, allowing Vikings to change their hairstyle and beard in-game – with 8 new hairstyles and 5 new beards added for more variety. Not only that, but equipped helmets no longer hide your hair, so you can proudly display your character’s locks and braids while still gearing up for battle. Inventory management is also smoother thanks to the new “Quick Stack” feature that lets you dump items into chests with one click, as well as the ability to manually adjust building piece snapping for precise construction placement. Perhaps the most impactful change for gameplay is the introduction of difficulty presets and world modifiers. You can now choose a relaxed Casual mode or ramp up to Hard mode, or fine-tune custom difficulty settings for your world. This means Valheim server hosting admins can tailor the challenge for their group – whether you want an easy-going building session or a brutal survival experience, the game now adapts to your playstyle. All these enhancements make Valheim more accessible and enjoyable for everyone, from new explorers to hardened veterans.
Ashlands: A Fiery New Biome for Endgame Challenges
The Ashlands update introduces a blazing volcanic biome, complete with formidable fortresses and fiery foes.
If Hildir’s Request enriches the mid-game, the Ashlands update cranks up the intensity for Valheim’s endgame. The Ashlands is a brand-new biome that expands the map to the far south – a volcanic “land of the dead” teeming with undead creatures and infernal landscapes. Unlike other biomes, Ashlands is only accessible by sea, as it’s now separated from the mainland, meaning you’ll need a sturdy longship (and some courage) to even reach its shores. Once you arrive, you’ll immediately feel the difference: cinders rain from the sky, scorching any unprepared adventurers, and wooden structures can catch fire in this superheated environment. Rivers of deadly lava crisscross the region, forcing you to construct makeshift stone pathways or risk a fiery death. In short, Ashlands is designed as Valheim’s most challenging biome yet – the developers even describe it as the penultimate biome in the game’s progression, meant to test players’ survival skills to the fullest.
To match its brutal environment, Ashlands comes packed with fearsome content and rewards for those brave enough to delve into it. Players will face over 10 new enemy types, from skeletal Charred warriors and archers to the spidery abomination called the Morgen, winged terrors like the Volture, and the menacing Fallen Valkyrie. Lurking deep within Ashlands is a formidable new boss named “Fader”, accompanied by a fiery mini-boss known as Lord Reto. These adversaries will push even experienced Vikings to their limits. Fortunately, you won’t be going into battle unarmed: the Ashlands update adds 30+ new weapons to craft and wield. This includes entire new tiers of gear – swords (such as the flaming blade Nidhogg), greatswords like the Slayer series, brutal axes, powerful bows and crossbows, and even magical staves to harness elemental powers. In fact, Ashlands introduces a new mechanic allowing you to upgrade Flametal weapons with special gems (Bloodstone, Iolite, Jade), imbuing them with elemental effects like blood (life-steal), storm, or nature damage. To protect yourself, you can forge three new armor sets, one of which is inspired by Embla (one of the first humans in Norse myth), alongside two new capes. There are also over 70 new buildable items, meaning you can craft everything from siege engines to building pieces. In fact, Ashlands enables players to capture Charred Fortresses scattered across the biome – massive new structures guarded by enemies. To conquer them, you’ll get access to two siege machines (including catapults and battering rams) to break down fortress walls. On the survival side, the biome brings new resources that can be turned into 15+ new foods and potions to fortify yourself against the extreme conditions (think hearty stews and fire-resistant brews). This huge slate of content ensures that the journey through Ashlands is rewarding; it significantly extends Valheim’s endgame, giving veteran players new goals to strive for and a reason to band together in search of glory.
As of 2024, the Ashlands update is live and free for all players (make sure your game is updated to the latest version to access it). This means your current world can generate Ashlands if you sail far enough south – though you might consider starting a fresh world if your existing map has fully explored that region, to ensure all new content appears.
